How do incorporate nature and the environment into your products and/or creation process?

“Gyotaku', the art of fish printing, is a traditional Japanese folk art method of honoring one's catch. The process entails catching a fish, gently applying ink to it, and creating an impression by rubbing fabric or mulberry (or rice paper) over it. Color, details, and scenery are added afterwards. I catch the fish honored in my gyotaku works in RI & MA coastal waters with rod & reel, and try my best to feature fish from ‘healthy’ fish stocks to highlight the incredible diversity of sustainable seafood we have here- from squid, to scup, butterfish, and beyond. The process captures the exact likeness of the fish: a record of a moment in time that lasts beyond the consumption. After printing, I remove the scales and eat it so nothing goes to waste!”

Clayhead Pottery

How do incorporate nature and the environment into your products and/or creation process?

“I walk on the beach most days, soaking in the blues and greens and sand colors, and occasionally picking up a small object to help me with my work. Most recently, I've been using a small beach pebble to make impressions in my thrown ware that I'll then use to form patterns in my glazes. The effects are like waves washing over stone, or light falling from a lighthouse in the fog. I also have small and responsibly harvested amounts of wild clay from Clayhead on Block Island, and I'm testing how to incorporate it into my work.”

Elizabeth Lee

How do incorporate nature and the environment into your products and/or creation process?

“Recycling materials is extremely important to me. Waste is a thing in the jewelry industry, a big thing. I am constantly pushing my boundaries as an artist to see what I can create from what I have or what someone else is getting rid of, I fully embrace that I am a glorified trash can. I encourage consumers to push their boundaries and broach the ever present mindset of constantly needing to purchase something new, step out of that cycle. I challenge other jewelers and artists to do the same. Curiosity, playfulness, and artistic distinction can not be purchased like precious stones and metals. Rather, they come from deep within, sprung from the ocean’s bottom and rising to the top. Worn materials, long lost scraps, reminders of once was, should have a place in modern day society.”
